What does it take to become a professional party DJ? In this article we will look at the training that our new female DJ Miffy has been going through over the last few months.
Great DJs are not born they are made. Made through hard work and practice. Long hours of trial and error in private followed by long hours of trial and hopefully no error in public! Contrary to popular belief DJing is not just pushing a few buttons and there are some serious skills to be learnt before you are ready to DJ at someones wedding or to DJ at a corporate function.
Over the last six months up and coming female DJ Miffy has been learning the trade under the watchful eye of one of our established full-time professional DJs John. In that time she has been with him for over 25 events in London where she has learnt how to set up the sound system, booth and lighting in different formations. She has also learnt how to beat match and cue tracks appropriately to allow smooth mixes between songs. But most importantly of all she has learnt how to play the right music for the crowd on the night by:
- reading the room and testing the guests early on with tracks over dinner to gauge what is going to work best to get the maximum number of people on the dancefloor
- planning several songs in advance so she knows what is coming next
- reading when a track that was working has started to wain and needs to be changed to keep the party high
These things ladies and gentlemen are the things that really take the time and practice. You can learn to plug in the gear within a couple of events, but the real skills behind being a great DJ are honed over time and need to be constantly refreshed by keeping up to date with the latest music and trends. Time does not standstill in the DJ world and those who do not keep themselves up to date get left behind very quickly.

She now understands what she needs to know technically, she has practiced and had real life experience getting parties up and jumping. We have also witnessed her handling software crashes whilst talking up the crowd and getting everyone involved whilst she rebooted her system. She managed the crowd so effortlessly, with such charisma that nobody even noticed.
You can’t teach charisma… so maybe great DJs are made but really great DJs are born.

“I’ve always been into music, having studied it and ‘dabbled’ as a teenager – but I never saw it as something I could earn a living from, so when I was approached to be trained up as YES entertainment’s latest female DJ – I leaped at the opportunity!
Before I was put on my own gigs, I was able to witness YES DJs first hand and experience their high calibre performances and I knew instantly it was going to be no easy feat to get to their level.
At first, I found gauging crowds was the most challenging aspect of DJing; looking at a group of people differing in age, culture and taste and trying to keep the party pumping with something that will resonate with everyone BUT I have found it really is very possible, and it comes with experience.
Being a female in the industry gives me a bit of an edge and I love that. I embrace being different and love adding a little bit of personality to my performances. I like to see everyone’s beautiful smiling faces! It’s by far the best part of being a DJ.
