This is one of those questions you see opinions on often on agency blogs. Should your wedding band play the first dance? At Yes Entertainment we believe you should approach your wedding band playing the first dance with caution.
1. Its not the right band
So you and your significant other have made fireworks to Katy Perry and so you’d like that to be your first dance. Clearly your male fronted wedding band, professional though they may be, will not pull it off particularly well. Point number one then is perhaps your band can play the first dance at your wedding if its the right sort of band. If your song doesn’t fit what they play we would recommend that you don’t even go down that route and just ask them to play your song by your favourite artist through their PA. Something they will be more than happy to do believe me. Especially if its Katy Perry!
2. Right sort of band but they don’t know the song
Less of an issue this one provided you give them sufficient notice, but in my experience what tends to happen when you agree to learn a song for the first dance is that a week before the wedding there is a change of song. Don’t forget even if its a three chord wonder song it still needs to be rehearsed so that it sounds tight with the whole band on the night. So if you have got the right sort of band, and they need to learn the song, give them sufficient time to practice and make sure it is really the song you want before you get them to learn it. You don’t want them learning the new one in the van on the way!
3. They’re good, but they’re not …..
No matter how good your wedding band is they are not the original artist who played your song. Sometimes they will play it better, but realistically more often than not they won’t. Don’t get me wrong if they are a truly professional band they’ll do a great job, but it won’t match the studio recording. This is particularly true if your song features a very distinct vocalist. Just something to be aware of.
So on balance we would say approach your band playing the first song with caution. Not because they can’t do it necessarily but it needs to be the right fit for it to really work. If in doubt play your first dance as you remember it by the original artist and then let the band cut loose and do what they do best. After all that’s why you hired them.
