Hiring a magician for a corporate function or wedding always breaks the ice with your guests. But it is important to remember that magicians have certain things they will and won’t do. Here are a handful of things to think about when you are looking for magicians for hire, whatever your event.

1. Magicians won’t start straight away
Magicians are professionally charming. Professionally charming people do not pounce on guests. If you hire a good magician, and we’re talking close hand magicians here, he or she will want to wait until your guests have started to arrive in sufficient numbers, got themselves drinks and have started to cluster into groups. In other words the party has started to settle a bit. Once that happens they will politely introduce themselves to their first group and then the amazement begins.
2. Close hand magicians can only work so fast
As a general rule of thumb if you assume a good close hand magician can entertain up to 60 guests per hour in groups then that is a good measure. So if you have a party of 200 and you hire a roving magician for an hour then you have to accept that not everyone is going to see some magic. So, depending on the number of guests you have, you need to either hire them for longer (more on that below) or perhaps go for a stage magic show, or combination of stage magic show and close hand magic option (not all magicians will do this so ask them or your entertainment agent whether this is possible).
3. Performing magic is very mentally tiring – magicians have their limits
Related to point 2 when you hire a magician they will tell you (or your entertainment agent will!) what their limit is in terms of performance. In our experience magicians will not perform for more than three hours in one session ideally. This is because to perform magic well (and believe us when we say all the magicians we work with certainly do that!) there is a huge amount of concentration involved and this is very hard work and extremely mentally taxing.
4. Magic doesn’t work well when the drinks have flowed past a certain point
We’ve all been there we’re having a great time, drinking responsibly, being very sociable, then wham! Suddenly we’re drunk. That’s when we suddenly become more entertaining than the professional entertainers. We are suddenly able, or at least think we are, to uncover the magic behind every trick and generally make a bit of a nuisance of ourselves for our suave, sophisticated and sober magician. For this reason magicians like to finish their evening before people start to cross the line. What time this is varies but in our experience of events after 10pm is not an appropriate time to start performing magic. Great time for a DJ, or live band and of course by then everyone will be amazing dancers!
